Nielsen: Time Spent on Social Media TRIPLES in 1 Year

It ain’t much more than a headline in a press release, but The Nielsen Company is reporting that  the amount of time spent on social media and networking sites has tripled from 6% of the total to 17% in just one year.

Says Jon Gibs, vice president, media and agency insights, Nielsen’s online division:

“This growth suggests a wholesale change in the way the Internet is used. … While video and text content remain central to the Web experience – the desire of online consumers to connect, communicate and share is increasingly driving the medium’s growth.”

That’s great, but could we get some detail, Jon? What’s losing? Are they just shifting from email to using Facebook for email? A hint, please. A hint.
